Housings and external parts for medical devices including wearable skin patches require materials durable enough to protect their interior components. Our polycarbonate resins and blends deliver the necessary strength and rigidity – as well as being aesthetically pleasing and providing necessary levels of biocompatibility.

Bayblend® and Makroblend® can be used to create robust electromedical device housings for a variety of applications including oxygen concentrators, automated external defibrillators, and sensor devices. These materials feature excellent mechanical and thermal properties as well as dimensional stability, rigidity at low temperatures, and flame retardancy. For housings that come into contact with intact skin, we offer special, skin-contact biocompatibility grades which meet ISO testing requirements for cytotoxicity, irritation and sensitization for specific colors. Certain Makroblend® materials are also specifically designed to withstand the aggressive chemical disinfection processes used to combat healthcare-associated infections, or HAIs.

Skin-friendly films and adhesives: Unprecedented comfort for wearables

With the growing digitalization of healthcare and the need to perform remote patient monitoring, wearable technologies are rapidly penetrating the medical field. Smart skin patches are a good example. This innovative digital application lets patients wear medical devices directly on the skin for transdermal transmission, continuous monitoring or electronic stimulation – making skin-friendly comfort a key element for these cutting-edge wearables. Based on our long-standing experience in medical materials, we have developed a set of skin-friendly materials for wearable skin patches: Platilon® TPU films, low-trauma Baymedix® adhesives, and thermoformable Baymedix® foams. All of these materials are skin-friendly and offer an unprecedented level of comfort. They are also compatible with roll-to-roll processing for efficient production.
