From Track to Trust: A Simpler Path to High-Performance Rail Components with TPU
What actually keeps a train running smoothly?
Passengers notice the ride. Engineers notice what makes it possible: thousands of small polymer components absorbing vibration, reduction noise, distributing dynamic load, and quietly wearing down day after day, year after year, under a rail network that never really stops.
Rail pads and under sleeper pads are two of the most unglamorous, most decisive components in that system. They determine how much noise and vibration reaches the surrounding environment, how evenly load is distributed into the track bed, and how long the infrastructure around them lasts before it needs maintenance. Get the material wrong, and the costs show up years later – In track degradation, in noise complaints, in replacement cycles nobody budgeted for.
Covestro developed Desmopan® TPU Series 6000 to meet that brief directly: ether-based TPU that matches or exceeds standard market grades on the properties that matter for rail and emitting significantly less CO₂ in the process.
Why does the raw material behind the TPU matter as much as the TPU itself?
Most standard ether TPU grades on the market share a hidden dependency: a raw material base that leans heavily on imported feedstocks, exposing producers to price volatility they can't control from their own supply chain.
Desmopan® TPU Series 6000 was built to break that dependency. More than 80% of its raw material base is sourced independently of imported substances – which translates directly into lower price sensitivity and more predictable costs for manufacturers. Combined with fewer production steps, the result is a final product that may costs less than standard ether materials in market today. The use of predominantly regionally sourced raw materials reduces transport-related CO₂ emissions.
What can this material actually do – and where?
Desmopan® 6000 series currently spans six standard grades, from a soft 45 Shore A grade to a hard 52 Shore D grade with, with more than 20 additional grades in development. That range lets a single material family cover a wide spread of railway applications without switching chemistries:
• Rail pads: engineered for static stiffness, dynamic stiffness, and system stiffening behavior
• Under sleeper pads: engineered for static stiffness, contact area, fatigue resistance, and pull-out resistance
The best engineering often isn't about adding complexity – it is about removing it. Desmopan® TPU Series 6000 was designed so that manufacturers can improve performance without having to change how they work. No new equipment, no new process required.
What does foaming technology change for rail component manufacturers?
This is where Series 6000 offers something genuinely practical: foaming that requires no new investment.
By simply adding a foaming agent in granulate form, manufacturers can foam the material from 0 to 50% - while retaining a complete, closed skin structure – without modifying their existing injection molding machinery. No new tooling, no new production qualification, no capital outlay.
What does this mean beyond the material spec sheet?
New materials and foaming technology like this make it realistic to produce rail-critical components – rail pads, under sleeper pads – cost-efficiently, closer to where they are needed. That means railway safety and passenger comfort built with local manufacturing capacity, using local labor, rather than depending on imported standard materials.
