Polycarbonate solutions support the electrification trend in mobility

The automotive industry is facing significant disruption as the shift towards electrification opens up new options for plastics in Li-ion batteries and electric powertrains. The boundaries between the electrical industry and automotive will move and therefore cause a paradigm shift. Polycarbonates open up new possibilities for powertrains

Up until now, automotive manufacturers have mainly used semi-crystalline materials in conventional combustion engines. The increasing electrification trend in the automotive industry will lead to new requirements which could be solved in a different way than in the past. This applies to parts like inverters, converters, onboard chargers, HV connectors, charging interfaces, junction boxes, power distributors, onboard-chargers, sensors and control units. Cooling and thermal management devices as well as crash absorbers also need to be ready for mass production.

Polycarbonate materials meet tough technical requirements

From Makrolon® to Bayblend®, we offer a broad portfolio of high performance polycarbonate-based materials. These polycarbonate materials come with convincing properties when it comes to ductility and toughness, fire resistance, electrical properties, and dimensional stability over a wide temperature range, even without glass fiber fillers. Moreover, polycarbonates offer great sensor transparency both for LIDAR and RADAR frequencies. Our new thermo-conductive and electrically insulating Makrolon® TC portfolio is a solution for applications that require cooling.
