Baypreg®: High-Strength Lightweight Composites
Baypreg® polyurethane (PU) is designed for manufacturing lightweight composites by spraying onto glass fiber mats and subsequent compression molding. The process is efficient and low emission with short cycle times, resulting in lightweight products with high mechanical strength.
Baypreg® for Load Floor and Cladding.
When combined with natural- or glass-fiber mats, Baypreg® is used to produce thin-walled interior cladding and lightweight lining components in an economical and more sustainable process. It’s compatible with paper honeycomb and other core materials such as polystyrene, wood, plastics, aluminum, and glass. This results in lightweight sandwich combinations with good flexural and torsional stiffness. Baypreg® is primarily used to produce automotive load floors and sunroofs. This versatile PU can also be used in efficient spray molding processes to achieve localized variations in sample thickness and PU concentration.
Baypreg® STM for Battery Cover and Underbody Protection
Baypreg® STM employs the Spray-Transfer-Molding (STM) process, where polyurethane resins are sprayed onto glass fibers and compression molded into battery covers for high-voltage batteries in electric vehicles. This advanced solution achieves up to 60% weight reduction compared to conventional steel shell materials as well as excellent fire protection in case of a thermal event. As a non-metallic material, the Baypreg® STM battery cover inherently offers battery pack manufacturers anti-corrosion and insulation properties, to prevent electric arcing. Due to its high amount of glass fibres, it also demonstrates high strength.
When combined with a rigid Polyurethane foam core, Baypreg® STM is also an ideal solution for lightweight underbody protection shields.
