Product description
Hydrophilically modified aliphatic polyisocyanate based on isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI).As the co-reactant for aqueous resins and as the hardener for chemically resistant and weather-stable coating systems.
Applications
Bayhydur® ultra 401-70 MPA is mainly used as the co-reactant for aqueous polyol binders from the Bayhydrol® range.Because of its hydrophilic character, Bayhydur® ultra 401-70 MPA can be easily emulsified in the aqueous phase. The properties (e.g. resistance to chemicals and solvents) of aqueous two-component polyurethane coatings can be improved by the addition of Bayhydur® ultra 401-70 MPA.
Form supplied
Approx. 70 % in 1-methoxypropylacetate-2(The product may contain up to 0.1 % Xylene.)

Solubility / thinnability
Generally speaking, Bayhydur® ultra 401-70 MPA has good compatibility with the solvents listed. However, the solutions must be tested for their storage stability.Bayhydur® ultra 401-70 MPA is fully soluble/thinnable with aromatics, even without the addition of polar solvents such as esters, ketones and ether esters, e.g. butyl glycol acetate and butyl diglycol acetate.Stable solutions with a minimum solids content of 20 % can be produced by thinning the supply form with, e.g. xylene, toluene or higher boiling aromatics such as solvent naphtha® 100 or mixtures of aromatics. The storage stability must always be tested. If longer storage stability is required, no aliphatics should be added to the thinned solutions. Nevertheless, Bayhydur® ultra 401-70 MPA has the necessary compatibility with aliphatics to be added to coatings containing aliphatic solvents. Only PU grade solvents (< 0.05 % water) should be used. The solvents should not contain reactive groups such as hydroxyl or amino groups.
Compatibility
Generally speaking, Bayhydur® ultra 401-70 MPA can be mixed with the Desmodur®, Bayhydur and Bayhydrol® grades listed. However, the compatibility must be tested within the context of the overall formulation (solids content, co-solvent content, type of co-solvent). Bayhydur® ultra 401-70 MPA can be mixed with Desmodur® ultra N 3300, ultra N 3600, Bayhydur® ultra 3100, most Bayhydrol® grades, e.g. Bayhydrol® A 145, A 242 and A 2058.
Storage
- Storage in original sealed Covestro container. - Recommended storage temperature: 0 - 30 °C. - Protect from moisture, heat and foreign material. General information: Hydrophilic isocyanates are very moisture-sensitive and react with water to form carbon dioxide and insoluble ureas. The containers must always be kept tightly closed. The access of water in all forms (moist air, solvents, moist containers) must be prevented, because the generation of carbon dioxide can lead to dangerous increases in pressure. Storage at higher temperatures will result in increase of color and viscosity.
Storage time
Covestro represents that, for a period of six months following the day of shipment as stated in the respective transport documents, the product will meet the specifications or values set forth in section "specifications or characteristic data" above, what ever is applicable, provided that the product is stored in full compliance with the storage conditions set forth in and referenced under section "storage" above and is otherwise handled appropriately. The lapse of the six months period does not necessarily mean that the product no longer meets specifications or the set values. However, prior to using said product, Covestro recommends to test such a product if it still meets the specifications or the set values. Covestro does not make any representation regarding the product after the lapse of the six months period and Covestro shall not be responsible or liable in any way for the product failing to meet specifications or the set values after the lapse of the six months period.
