Infused with innovation: Non-electric infusion system for extreme environments
Delivering life-saving medications in emergency and battlefield conditions where electricity isn't available is where traditional infusion methods fall short. MonuMedical's EZfuser™ single-use syringe pump for out-of-hospital care uses medical-grade Makrolon®.
MonuMedical LLC needed to develop a medical device capable of delivering medications in environments where electronic pumps are unavailable, such as military operations, EMS and home infusion settings. The device needed to be wearable, compact, disposable, and non-electric while still meeting rigorous medical device requirements.
This collaboration exemplifies how teams come together to address unmet needs in healthcare, especially in environments where reliability and resilience are non-negotiable.
The EZfuser™ required materials that could withstand extreme conditions while still meeting medical device requirements. The material needed to provide high impact resistance, be sterilizable by gamma radiation, and be compatible with ultrasonic welding processes. Additionally, the device needed to maintain dimensional and thermal stability across different environments to ensure reliable drug delivery.
We saw a need in the field for a reliable, portable infusion device. Covestro's expertise in material science helped us bring this vision to life, ensuring the EZfuser™ meets the rigorous demands of out-of-hospital care.
MonuMedical LLC choose Makrolon® Rx2530 polycarbonate for the EZfuser™. This medical-grade material offers a unique combination of properties including dimensional and thermal stability, sterilizability by steam and high-energy radiation, ISO 10993 biocompatibility testing, and compatibility with ultrasonic welding. Covestro also provided additional support in selecting custom colors that met regulatory requirements for various components.
