Decorative PU terrazzo flooring at the Covestro Campus in Leverkusen

The first impression you have upon entering a building is important. And one of the first things visitors to the Covestro Campus notice is the decorative terrazzo flooring in the reception area and in the open atrium. 2K water-based polyurethane technology from Covestro helped create a long-lasting and low-emission floor coating.
Task

Attractive and robust floor coating

The 1,800 square meter, attractive flooring of the atrium at the new campus building is a PU-bonded rubber granulate terrazzo floor. It was sealed with a water-based 2K PU coating, so that the terrazzo floor will continue to look attractive for many years to come.

Heart and center of the futuristic Campus building in Leverkusen: its PU-bonded terrazzo floor.

The elastic overall system with no joints and a coordinated PU seal creates a highly resilient floor, and the sealing also ensures it is extremely easy to clean – that saves time and money.

Challenge

Long-lasting, easy to clean and low-emission

Durability is essential for attractive floor coatings in high-traffic areas. In addition, sustainability plays a key role when choosing the materials to be used. Richard Frische, Technical Project Manager at Covestro, underscores these aspects: “In addition to key requirements for the space such as footfall sound insulation, walking comfort and ease of cleaning, we are also proud  to note that the coating fulfills the requirements of the LEED Gold building certification.”

Solution

Sealing with water-based 2K PU coating

It was these requirements that led to the choice for a PU-bonded rubber granulate terrazzo floor, sealed with a water-based 2K PU coating. This elastic flooring system developed by Swiss installation company TEXOLIT AG offers a wide range of advantages that made it an easy choice for the building owner.

The terrazzo floor in the Leverkusen campus was sealed off with a water-based 2K PU coating that lets off less emissions.

Philipp Herzog, CEO of TEXOLIT, explains how it works: “The elastic overall system with no joints and a coordinated PU sealing creates a highly resilient floor, and the sealing also ensures that it is extremely easy to clean – that saves time and money.”

Water-based polyurethane sealing is especially low in emissions, and is often the first choice for decorative coatings in indoor areas.

Artur Kehrle, CEO of KLB Kötztal, says “With technically proven raw materials from Covestro, we are able to manufacture low-emission, certified sealings that conform to many European standards.”

In addition to key requirements for the space such as footfall sound insulation, walking comfort and ease of cleaning, we also want to emphasize that the coating fulfills the requirements of the LEED Gold building certification.
