Decovery®, let's be clear...

We believe that our customers, partners and consumers have a right to know precisely what goes into Decovery® and how it is manufactured. Which is why we are committed to being completely clear and transparent – about our product and processes.

The roots of success in plant-based paint

Seeds, tree bark, castor beans and other agricultural waste are the prime ingredients of Decovery®. Today, around 75% of these ingredients have negligible competition with the food chain. As we start to scale up production, we intend to move to a second-generation production process that does not interfere with the food chain at all. This means not only looking at how we get a greater yield of useful material from the raw materials, but also using completely new natural materials. For example, materials that can be chemically engineered to produce the natural oils we need to make a high-performing paint resin – until we eventually reach our goal of making 100% plant-based paints.
We go to great lengths to ensure transparency across the entire supply chain right back to the farm. We are currently working on certifying all feedstock and have some promising stories with suppliers.
We then use an acknowledged scientific method called the C14 analysis to measure and demonstrate the amount of plant-based materials inside every product in the Decovery® family – all conducted by a specialist independent laboratory. This enables us to give our customers a certificate confirming the precise amount of plant-based content in the product they buy (Decovery® can contain as much as 52% plant-based content depending on the grade). We are happy to share further information upon request.

Lifecycle assessments: from cradle-to-gate

For every product in the Decovery® family we conduct a life cycle assessment (LCA) that benchmarks the environmental impact across its entire lifetime from cradle-to-gate versus a fossil-based equivalent.

To make this process as transparent as possible, all our LCAs are reviewed by an independent third party and are based on the latest ISO-14040-14044 quality standards and guidelines from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

So... What’s the carbon footprint of Decovery®?

One crucial role of the LCA is to measure the carbon footprint of our Decovery® family. Today we achieve a carbon footprint reduction of up to 34% versus equivalent fossil-based resins. But what does this mean in real terms?

Making our supply chain more sustainable

At Decovery® we strive to create more sustainable products and processes. We are also the first to admit that we can only be part of the solution. We need to come together as an entire value chain to affect real change. That is why we joined the Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative – a global program that assesses and audits the supply chains of our suppliers and partners.

The sustainability performance of our supply chain is monitored by independent auditors who visit factories, warehouses, and offices to assess various criteria including the environment, health & safety, labor & human rights, governance, and general management. Based on the findings we work with our partners to continuously improve the environmental impact of their operations. After all, we are all in this together.
