A more sustainable IPDI-based crosslinker portfolio
Welcoming the Desmodur® CQ I and Desmodur® CQ ultra Z product line for a more sustainable portfolio
We recognize the need for high quality coatings that are more environmentally friendly and easy to work with. This has led to the development of Desmodur® CQ I and selected Desmodur® CQ ultra Z products. This new product line comprises IPDI-based (isophorone diisocyanate) crosslinkers. These have a long and established history in various applications that require lightfast, quick-drying coatings with high hardness and weathering resistance, such as automotive refinishing or waterproofing in construction.
With our CQ suffix, we make it easy for our customers to identify products that drive greater circularity and thus address the growing sustainability ambitions in the coatings industry. Today, we already offer a variety of coating and adhesive raw materials that partly utilize non-fossil feedstock. The latest additions, Desmodur® CQ I and Desmodur® CQ ultra Z, enable our customers to reduce carbon footprints and the consumption of fossil-based raw materials compared with conventional grades. These products can be combined with our existing CQ solutions, such as Desmophen® CQ and Acclaim CQ, to further enhance the overall sustainability performance of coating formulations.
Our cycloaliphatic IPDI-trimer product line, Desmodur® CQ ultra Z, comes with an ‘ultra’ low monomer content of below 0.1% for increased industrial hygiene. Importantly, these products do not fall under the REACH restriction on diisocyanates, and no additional training beyond the general safety measures for isocyanates is required.
Using certified bio-circular feedstock to reduce the use of fossil-based raw materials
Our Desmodur® CQ I and Desmodur® CQ ultra Z products utilize bio-circular raw materials made from waste and residues via the mass-balance approach. To guarantee sustainable sourcing and transparent attribution of our more sustainable inputs, our operations and the upstream supply chain hold ISCC PLUS certification, audited by an independent third party. Our new products has been attributed a share of up to 55% bio-circular feedstock via mass balance approach, translating to a 75% sustainable share in terms of carbon atoms. The actual proportion of sustainable raw materials of each solution depends on the individual product composition.
Mass balance: An established approach to enable more sustainable products
The mass-balance approach enables us to offer more sustainable drop-in products that match the high performance and quality of our conventional offerings. No reformulation is needed, allowing our customers to effortlessly expand their product range with more sustainable options and without additional R&D investments.
This method has become a standard practice in various industries. Within the coatings and adhesives sector, mass balancing is already a reality and is acknowledged as a crucial element in enabling a fast transition toward a more sustainable future.
Mass balancing is becoming an established approach in the coatings industry, similar to long-established and trusted schemes in the fair trade market – for example, for cocoa.
