Powder: A great option for more sustainable coatings
With our world facing multiple environmental challenges, it’s no surprise that many coatings producers are looking to improve their environmental impact.
At Covestro, enabling more sustainable coating technologies is a top priority for us – and powder coatings can be one of the most sustainable coating systems available, since they don’t release solvents.
We continuously work to make our powder coating resins even more sustainable – by using alternative raw materials and energy, optimizing our resins’ properties, and enabling recycling of powder coatings and other waste materials to reuse in powder coatings.
Specifically, we are aiming for climate-neutral in-house production and sourcing (Scope 1 & 2 emissions) by 2035.
How we improve sustainability in our powder coatings
Alternative raw materials
From RPET to mass-balanced
One way we strive to make our powder-coating resins more sustainable is by using alternative raw materials, including bio-based raw materials, RPET and mass-balanced raw materials.
Several Uralac® solutions are part of our CQ portfolio of products with at least 25% alternative raw materials – Uralac® CQ P500 was one of our first CQ products.
RPET and mass-balanced raw materials typically deliver the same coating properties as their traditional equivalents, while bio-based materials can enable new beneficial properties.
Optimized properties
Saving materials and energy
Optimizing our resins’ properties can also help to make them more sustainable.
For instance, by developing resins that cure more quickly or at lower temperatures, we can enable reduced energy use and emissions.
And by making our resins more effective, durable, and resistant, we can enable coatings that last longer, save valuable resources, and have a lower carbon footprint.
