Makrolon® RE for light switches and sockets of SAGA™ collection
ABB’s focus on a more circular economy aligns with the task, aiming to achieve a low-carbon society, preserve resources, and drive social progress. At Covestro, our mission is to support our partners with more sustainable materials, paving the way into a climate neutral* future. Together with ABB, we developed the industry’s first switches and sockets made from Makrolon® RE, a high-performance polycarbonate with very low carbon footprint.
The Makrolon® RE polycarbonate in Signal White (RAL9003), which is used in the SAGA collection, has an 85.8 % share of allocated bio-circular raw materials. Compared to conventional, purely fossil-based polycarbonates, the Makrolon® RE grades have a positive impact of decreasing the Global Warming Potential (GWP) with more than 80%.
“Utilizing Covestro's solutions is not just a choice; it's a strategic relief. It's about crafting products that don't just connect circuits but connect with a sustainable future and setting a new standard for responsible electrification."
Our material solution for ABBs challenging goals is Makrolon® RE, a bio-circular and, as a thermoplastic polymer, recyclable material.
ABB’s Mission to Zero™ program drives the Porvoo factory to achieve carbon-neutral operations, showcasing a significant leap towards sustainability. The SAGA™ wiring collection, a testament to this collaboration, not only meets but exceeds the highest quality standards.
Covestro’s crucial role in this journey involves supporting ABB with low carbon footprint Makrolon® RE, a more sustainable polycarbonate with UV resistance in signal white. This product solution not only addresses the challenge of sustainability but also sets new benchmarks for high product quality and environmental responsibility in the switches and sockets industry.
“By utilizing Makrolon® RE for the SAGA™ series of switches and sockets, we not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also substitute fossil fuels with renewable raw materials in the value chain. This collaboration marks a milestone towards eco-conscious electrification, creating high-quality products simultaneously.”
