What is polycarbonate?

Polycarbonates (PC) are a group of thermoplastic polymers whose chemical structures contain carbonate groups.
Polycarbonate resins are used in applications where strength, heat resistance and toughness are necessary, and are available in a variety of transparent and opaque colors. Generally, these resins are converted into finished parts using injection molding or thermoforming.
Polycarbonate products are often found in electronics which make use of their electrical insulating, heat-resistant and flame-retardant properties. They may also be found in construction, transportation, aviation, and automotive applications. For example, their impact resistant, smooth surfaces make them well suited for use in automotive headlamp lens covers.

Makrolon® and Apec® polycarbonate products from Covestro offer many attractive characteristics. They are primarily sought for their unique combination of transparency, toughness, stiffness and temperature resistance.
Makrolon® polycarbonate from Covestro is a clear, amorphous thermoplastic resin that is available in a variety of compositions including: general purpose, flame retardant, impact modified, IR sensor transparent, thermally conductive, glass fiber or mineral reinforced, medical, and optical and lighting. The non-reinforced, general purpose grades are available in a range of viscosities. Blending polycarbonate resin with ABS or polyester allows compositions enabling additional versatility.
Makrolon® PC resins are most notable for their unique combination of transparency, outstanding toughness, stiffness and heat resistance. The naturally transparent base polymer forms the ideal blank canvas for a wide array of transparent, opaque and special-effect color options.
Apec® high-heat PC resins represent a further development of Makrolon® PC that extends heat resistance to significantly higher temperatures while retaining excellent transparency, good flow properties and high impact strength. "
Apec® polycarbonate resins can be used over a broad range of temperatures ranging from about -30°C (-22°F) to approximately 200°C (392°F).

Blends and alloys enable high-performance attributes 

Our blends and alloys, which combine the properties of polycarbonate resin with other thermoplastics, offer a unique combination of properties including high toughness, even at low temperatures; good chemical resistance; reduced susceptibility to stress cracking; good paintability; and low moisture uptake.
Bayblend® is the Covestro trademark for a class of amorphous polymer blends containing polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) or styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN). Bayblend® products deliver a favorable combination of mechanical and thermal properties.
Bayblend® PC+ABS blends provide an excellent alternative for applications requiring a flame rating, elevated temperature resistance, impact performance and improved surface appearance over that provided by unblended ABS.
Makroblend® resins are alloys of polycarbonate (PC) and polyester. The blends combine the outstanding characteristics of polycarbonate and polyester to create a family of ultra-tough materials for applications with demanding physical, chemical and environmental requirements. 
The family of Makroblend® PC+polyester blends exhibits enhanced chemical resistance versus polycarbonate or PC+ABS blends. Some grades also exhibit improved low-temperature impact performance and superior fatigue resistance.
