Desmopan® EC TPUs make more sustainable steps with resources of the future

A new take on waste 

At Covestro, we believe that transitioning to a Circular Economy is key to effectively addressing global challenges, which call for more sustainable consumption and production. 
As we move away from linear production and make efforts to replace fossil raw materials, we see the value that end-of-life materials have to offer. These materials are likely to become the most important alternative raw material sources in the future, which is why we’re looking at ways to produce our own products from these sources now.
Take biomass, for example. Plants produce carbon using only water, carbon dioxide and solar energy. We’re turning to this nature-led, more sustainable way of production as we increasingly use carbon from biomass to partially replace fossil resources, like crude oil. This is the approach we took when creating our new TPU series, Desmopan® EC. 

Desmopan® EC: In step with improving sustainability

Our Desmopan® TPU products offer high wear resistance, flexibility across a wide range of temperatures, and high elasticity over the entire hardness range. Now, we’re building on the properties of these high-performance polymers with our new range of TPUs: Desmopan® EC.
Up to 60% of the carbon content of this new series is sourced from biomass*, depending on the product hardness. When compared to fossil-based TPUs, its carbon footprint can also be reduced by more than 20%.
The Desmopan® EC range delivers these benefits without compromising quality or performance. It also has an excellent oil, grease and solvent resiliency, and is resistant to weathering and high-energy radiation. Additionally, Desmopan® EC products can be offered with Bluesign approval, ensuring that the products were manufactured with responsible use of resources and have the lowest possible impact on people and the environment.
With these materials, designers and manufacturers can take big steps toward their sustainability goals and, ultimately, contribute to improving the environment. For example, the sports and leisure industry needs to keep up with consumer demand for more sustainable products. Our Desmopan® EC TPU can help take footwear applications to the next level while helping to meet these needs.
