Bayfol® HX film enables laser protection systems for pilots and law enforcement personnel
Rising threat of laser attacks
Laser attacks on aircraft and law enforcement have become a serious safety concern worldwide. In 2025 alone, pilots reported over 10,000 incidents to the US authorities, with the global numbers likely to be much higher. In most cases, green laser light at 532 nm wavelength is being used that can temporarily blind pilots during critical flight phases. Police officers face similar ground-based risks during crowd control operations.
Laser protection solutions with holographic photopolymer film
We have developed Bayfol® HX, a specialized holographic photopolymer film that functions as an optical notch filter in visors and glasses. This laser protection film achieves 99.999% laser light diffraction efficiency to protect pilots from harmful laser attacks. With the volume holographic optical element (vHOE) recorded in the film, natural color is preserved, with high transparency and stability. Bayfol® HX meets ANSI Z136.1 safety standards and provides targeted protection against specific laser wavelengths without impairing normal vision. This film i.e. embedded into protection glasses allows pilots to see instrument and runway lights without color distortion while meeting aviation industry standards.
Safety enabled by advanced material technology
Bayfol® HX120 film features triacetate-based construction with superior optical properties and refractive index characteristics. The dry-coat technology ensures stability across varying environmental conditions and enables robust lamination with adhesives. Available in large-format rolls, this laser protective solution offers flexible customization for diverse laser safety applications in aviation and law enforcement sectors.
Key benefits
- Powerful deflection: Filters harmful laser light while retaining high optical properties for “see-through” quality.
- Natural colors: Broadband sensitization allows multiplexing of multiple notches, so colors appear natural.
- Easy production: Dry coat photopolymer enables high volume production with no wet chemistry.
- Versatile: Large-format availability enables diverse retrofit applications.
- Variety in design: Film can be integrated into flat or cylindrical lenses, displays and more.
