Protecting healthcare facilities with the right disinfectants

Healthcare facilities are increasing their cleaning and decontamination measures to help protect patients and staff against COVID-19. With this in mind, it’s important for healthcare OEMs to understand which recommended disinfectants are most compatible with the materials used in their applications.

Finding a compatible disinfectant with minimal effects on surfaces

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released infection control guidance for healthcare facilities that have patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. As part of these guidelines, the CDC recommends using cleaners and water to pre-clean surfaces prior to applying a hospital-grade disinfectant that is registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). According to the CDC’s hospital preparedness checklist, EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectants should be used for frequent cleaning of high-touch surfaces and shared patient care equipment.

The EPA’s disinfectants list outlines those that meet its criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2—the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. While these disinfectants help sterilize surfaces and equipment, they may also affect polycarbonate-based surfaces.

As a reliable supplier to the healthcare industry, we developed a two-page guide that helps OEMs and equipment manufacturers understand how our materials can stand up to the various EPA-recommended disinfectants against SARS-CoV-2. The EPA’s list includes milder disinfectants, which are also effective and well-tolerated by our materials.

With this resource, OEMs can feel confident in recommending specific disinfectants for their applications, based on the materials used.
