Product description
Low-functionality isocyanate based on hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI).To improve the storage stability of pigmented moisture-curing one-component polyurethane coatings with good lightfastness and weather stability.
Applications
Beginning at 50 °C, Desmodur® LD reacts with water, releasing carbon dioxide and acting as a dewatering agent to ensure the storage stability of pigmented moisture-curing one-component polyurethane coatings. The stoichiometric conversion of 1 g water requires approx. 40 g Desmodur® LD. However, trials and actual use have shown that the best results are achieved using double to three times this quantity of Desmodur® LD.The reactivity of Desmodur® LD with water is comparable with that of the aliphatic Desmodur® E products. Drying of the pigments, extenders and solvents with Desmodur® LD must therefore be carried out before addition of the main binder to prevent undesired reactions and an increase in viscosity. In the ready-to-use formulation, the content of Desmodur® LD in the total binder should not exceed 30 %, calculated on the solvent-free resin.

Solubility / thinnability
Generally speaking, Desmodur® LD has good compatibility with the solvents listed. However, the solutions formed must be tested for their storage stability. Desmodur® LD can be dissolved in esters such as ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and 1-methoxypropylacetate-2. It has only limited solubility in aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene, xylene, Solvesso® 100 and Shellsol® A. Above all, prolonged storage of solutions with a low binder content may result in turbidity and sedimentation. The product cannot be dissolved in white spirit.Alcohols react with Desmodur® LD and can therefore not be used.Only PU grade solvents (< 0.05 % water) should be used. The solvent should not contain reactive groups.
Compatibility
Generally speaking, Desmodur® LD has good compatibility with aliphatic polyisocyanate prepolymers such as Desmodur® E 3265 and Desmodur® ultra E 3370.
Storage
- Storage in original sealed Covestro container. - Recommended storage temperature: 0 - 30 °C. - Protect from moisture, heat and foreign material. General information: The product is sensitive to moisture. Storage at higher temperatures will result in increase of color and viscosity.
Storage time
Covestro represents that, for a period of nine months following the day of shipment as stated in the respective transport documents, the product will meet the specifications or values set forth in section "specifications or characteristic data" above, what ever is applicable, provided that the product is stored in full compliance with the storage conditions set forth in and referenced under section "storage" above and is otherwise handled appropriately. The lapse of the nine months period does not necessarily mean that the product no longer meets specifications or the set values. However, prior to using said product, Covestro recommends to test such a product if it still meets the specifications or the set values. Covestro does not make any representation regarding the product after the lapse of the nine months period and Covestro shall not be responsible or liable in any way for the product failing to meet specifications or the set values after the lapse of the nine months period.
