Desmodur® & Bayhydur® CQ: Partly bio-based isocyanates for industrial coatings
Making more sustainable hardeners possible for industrial coatings
Aliphatic isocyanates are a key ingredient in the polyurethane industrial coatings that provide long-term performance and weather resistance in everything from agricultural and construction equipment to cars and wind turbines.
Across these industries, coating manufacturers and end users are increasingly demanding more sustainable coating solutions. But switching to more sustainable isocyanates often comes with challenges: maintaining performance, securing supply, and meeting varied application needs.
With Desmodur® and Bayhydur® CQ, we’re making partly bio-based isocyanates available on a large scale. Designed to enable excellent weather and corrosion resistance, these hardeners are suitable for most high-performance industrial coatings.
Increased bio-based content with proven comparable performance to fossil-based equivalents
Desmodur® and Bayhydur® CQ offer the same technical performance as traditional fossil-fuel-based hardeners, enabling excellent weathering resistance, pot life, and drying times. But, with up to 68% bio-based content and a product carbon footprint reduction of up to 30%, they also enable more sustainable polyurethane coatings compared to fossil-based countertypes.
A practical, near drop-in solution for creating more sustainable polyurethane coatings
Switching from fossil-fuel-based isocyanates to more sustainable, partly bio-based hardeners shouldn't be a showstopper for your formulation and application process. Implementing Desmodur® and Bayhydur® CQ requires minimal adjustment; you can use them in most of the same applications as fossil-fuel-based hardeners.
A broad portfolio and support for tailor-made solutions
Whatever your industrial coatings application, we can be an inventive and practical companion, ready to help you make a seamless transition to partly bio-based polyurethane coatings.
Our Desmodur® and Bayhydur® CQ portfolio includes a broad range of products, covering solventborne and waterborne applications respectively. These products can be used to create more sustainable coatings for agricultural, construction, and earthmoving equipment, as well as transportation coatings and general industrial metal coatings.
Plus, these partly bio-based isocyanates are available in Ultra grades that contain <0.1 wt% monomer. This allows you to improve industrial hygiene standards and removes the need for additional isocyanate handling training under the EU’s REACH regulation.
With large-scale product availability, we can also help you create tailor-made solutions. And we’ll continue to grow our portfolio of partly bio-based hardeners as the industrial coatings market grows – for example, by developing low-viscosity grades.
Coating manufacturers want to use more renewable raw materials but are concerned about the impact on their formulation and application process. Desmodur® and Bayhydur® CQ answer the call for partly bio-based hardeners that require minimal efforts to implement or costs.
