Long-term TES tank insulation and waterproofing performance
TES (thermal energy storage) tanks store heat energy and are therefore essential for reducing peak energy demand.
TES tanks need insulation to minimize heat loss and maintain stable thermal energy storage. This insulation must be protected from moisture ingress, abrasion, and corrosion to avoid performance loss and costly repairs.
Delta Coatings was tasked with delivering high-performance spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation protected by a seamless polyurea waterproofing coating that could maintain long-term tank integrity – reducing energy loss, extending service life, and lowering lifecycle costs.
TES tanks regularly undergo thermal cycling, creating expansion and contraction stresses that can damage conventional waterproofing systems. This can compromise insulation layers, increasing energy losses and requiring costly repairs.
The challenge was to deliver stable long-term thermal performance, while also providing waterproofing and abrasion protection. Reliable adhesion, chemical resistance, mechanical durability, and high flexibility were also essential to ensuring continuous insulation protection and longer TES tank service life.
The energy performance of TES tanks depends on strong insulation and a reliable protective coating. Combining spray polyurethane foam insulation and a long-lasting polyurea membrane gave us a solution that reduces heat loss, protects against corrosion, and minimizes future maintenance cycles.
Delta Coatings formulated a high-performance SPF insulation with raw materials from Covestro, creating an efficient thermal barrier that helps minimize heat loss in TES tanks.
To safeguard the insulation layer, a seamless polyurea membrane was applied, also formulated using Covestro raw materials. This polyurea coating cures within seconds and forms a continuous, highly durable, waterproof protective coating that resists moisture intrusion and abrasion. The high elongation and durability of polyurea helps ensure long-term waterproofing performance and reduced maintenance.
We are always thinking how our materials can contribute to increased energy efficiency and long-lasting infrastructure solutions - working with Delta Coatings provided the perfect opportunity to show this in action!
