Fast cure and strong protection with Desmodur® and Desmophen®
The city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is constantly expanding. One of its recent developments is District One, Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City (MBR City), which is spread across 1,100 acres of lush greenery. At the heart of MBR City is its iconic man-made lagoon – central to the area’s visual appeal.
As part of this concept, the lagoon needed a bright, decorative, seamless lining system for its entire shoreline, as well as its podiums and walkways. Construction coatings solution provider Delta Coatings had the task of providing this system.
Speed was essential in this project. To be ready for the lagoon launch in 2020, Delta Coatings needed to not only develop the coating, but also apply it very quick to the entire shoreline area of 20,000m2, in just six months.

To address these challenges, Delta Coatings decided to use a thick film elastomeric aliphatic polyurea coating system based on our Desmodur® and Desmophen® raw materials. They used these materials in their DELTAShield Aqualine AL 2K waterproofing membrane.
The aliphatic polyurea technology had several advantages. Firstly, the coating could cure quickly at ambient temperatures, shortening the application time.
Equally important was the excellent resistance to UV, weather, and mechanical damages that the coating based on Desmodur® and Desmophen® provided. This technology delivers an optimum balance between flexibility and tensile strength, while also offering excellent hardness and abrasion resistance.
Together, these properties enabled Delta Coatings to provide a highly protective, durable coating in time for the lagoon launch. As a result, MBR City residents can now enjoy beautiful walkways along the lagoons for years to come.
