Revolutionary optometry devices with Covestro polycarbonates
Our task with Occuity was to propose and supply a suitable housing material for their non-contact handheld devices. The material needed to meet customer-specific performance and color targets, provide excellent laser-marking capabilities, and fulfill mechanical requirements for medical electronic device protection, all within a medical-grade standard. Specifically, the material had to be colored in glossy white as per customer specifications, while maintaining necessary rigidity and impact resistance for housing material components.

In the pursuit of Occuity's mission to develop non-contact handheld devices for versatile healthcare applications, the challenge was multifaceted. Our task encompassed proposing and delivering a housing material that adhered to rigorous standards. This material needed to meet specific performance and color targets, facilitate efficient laser marking, and satisfy stringent mechanical requirements to safeguard the device's internal electronics. All of these criteria had to be met while ensuring the material maintained a medical-grade standard. The complexity of the challenge lay in harmonizing these diverse demands to create a material housing solution that seamlessly integrated with Occuity's groundbreaking diagnostic technology , enabling precise measurements for optometry and broader health monitoring, including conditions like diabetes and Alzheimer's Disease.
“Our precision optical systems demand equally high-performance enclosures to withstand modern clinical environments. Using Makrolon®, we were able to achieve medical-grade performance without compromising on crisp laser etching and our signature bright white finish.”
Makrolon® 2458, customized in an individual color, was meticulously adapted and successfully qualified for the current medical device iteration. Furthermore, we are actively exploring the integration of Makrolon® M6011 FR for upcoming device generations, offering the same color specifications as Makrolon® 2458 while boasting improved chemical resistance and a UL fire rating. Covestro's capability to match color specifications across different grades ensured uniform material designs and met our customer's defined standards. With exceptional technical performance, coloring services enhancing aesthetics, and medical-grade polycarbonate qualifications, our solutions left the customer thoroughly satisfied.
“Makrolon® polycarbonates, offering superior colorability, chemical resistance, biocompatibility, and mechanical perfomance, empower Occuity's vision of revolutionary optometry devices.
Covestro proudly supports Occuity's mission to make accessible, mobile diagnostic health devices the norm, ending repetitive invasive monitoring.“
