Decovery® SP-6000 XP

A repulpable solution with all of the performance, with less of the oil
Contact expert Request a sample Request a quote

Demand for sustainable packaging has grown dramatically. With consumers becoming more mindful of the effects of their buying choices on the environment, pressure has increased on paper and paperboard packaging producers to eliminate barrier coatings that use polyethylene, paraffin-based waxes, silicones and fluorochemicals.

However, packaging needs to preserve the product it contains. That’s where Decovery® SP-6000XP comes in. Replacing more of the oil with bio-based materials reduces CO2 emissions during manufacturing and also prevents damage to the environment through invasive exploration and extraction methods.

The resin the industry – and consumers – have been waiting for

Decovery® SP-6000XP is a barrier coating resin, which is an alternative to polyethylene (PE) and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) based solutions. This high-performance, 29% bio-based acrylic is designed for barrier coatings for paper substrates. It works very well with all existing application methods, especially flexo and gravure. Decovery® SP-6000XP resin provides a water barrier (Cobb-tested) combined with high flexibility. It performs well in flexible paper substrates in food and non-food applications such as sandwich wraps, tea envelopes, folding board boxes and other takeout-type packaging.

The flexibility your packaging needs

Decovery® SP-6000XP’s water barrier properties (Cobb-tested) prove its grease resistance in highly flexible performance. This makes it especially effective when used in flexible paper substrates for food and non-food applications, such as sandwich wraps, tea envelopes, folding board boxes and other takeout packaging.

  • Dry food, sugar bags, tea envelopes
  • Flexible paper, sandwich wraps/cheese
  • Hot food containers
  • Cold food containers
  • Recyclable paper pouches replacing secondary plastic packaging

Fully compatible with all these application methods

  • Gravure print technique
  • Flexo print technique
  • Roller coating
  • Curtain coating
  • Air knife

How Decovery® packaging resins help our world

The packaging market is experiencing a surge towards more sustainable technologies. Driven by end-consumer demand, brand owners have announced ambitious sustainability pledges. Now it is up to the entire industry to deliver on these challenging goals.

Our Decovery® portfolio is well suited for the creation of high-quality coating resins that meet the environmental demands of the packaging markets – they contain zero-to-low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), yet can match or even exceed the performance of starch-based alternatives

Decovery® resins are partially made from plant-based resources, such as bark and beans, which are sustainably sourced and do not compete with the food chain.

Decovery® SP-6000XP environmental impact

  1. Verified by Beta Analytic Inc. (Biobased and Biogenic Carbon Testing Laboratory), according to ASTM D6866-16 Method B (AMS)
  2. Data based on internal calculation. Results may slightly vary compared to final 3rd party reviewed LCA report. Lifecycle assessment is currently being conducted according to ISO-14040-14044, IPCC 2013 GWP 100a standard and the WBCSD chemical sector guidance; Data expressed in kg CO2/ kg resin; absolute CFP SP-6000: 0,56 kg CO2 / kg resin
  3. Calculation based on data from United States Environmental Protection Agency

Putting Decovery® SP-6000XP to the test

Kit and grease test

Ensuring good grease resistance

The purpose of this test is to ensure any food packaging retains grease and oil while preventing contamination of the product.

Grease leakage will eventually cause dark spots on the outer layer of the paper or board.

In the Kit test, a drop of fluid is put on the side of the board. The time it takes for spots to appear on the board is then measured, and expressed as a measurement of a material’s grease resistance.

In the grease resistance test, a cup of olive oil is poured into a folded substrate. The time it takes for oil to start leaking through the substrate is then measured.

COF test

Testing for coefficient of friction

Coefficient of friction (COF) is critical to the optimum processing and handling of packaging. There are two common, basic COF testers — sliding plane and inclined plane.

There are two measures used to establish overall COF:

Static COF – measured the very moment motion starts between two surfaces.

Kinetic COF – this is established once motion between two surfaces commences.

Why is this important? If either of these values is too high, it can cause problems throughout the printing process. These are problems such as obstructions in the filling line and issues with stacking printed materials.

When either value is too low, materials (such as paper or film) may not pass easily through machines, or machinery may run too slowly to actually process the materials.

According to recent customer feedback, our great COF scores provide reassurance that our products are a good starting point for their formulation.

Cobb test

To ensure our resins help prevent water uptake by the substrate

The Cobb test determines the amount of water that is taken up by an area of paper or card by placing one side of the substrate in contact with water for a defined period of time.

A high Cobb value shows that the substrate has a good ability to absorb and retain water. However, a low Cobb value tells us that the substrate is able to resist water.

The low Cobb scores that Decovery® SP-6000 achieves means it will protect your paper and board from water uptake, and exceeds the performance of starch alternatives in the market.

Heat seal testing

To ensure an effective seal

We test the following properties:

Seal limit

The minimum temperature needed for a proper seal at given times and pressures. Normally expressed in °C and may refer to the machinery used in the test e.g. Otto Brugger.

Seal window

The maximum and minimum temperatures between which proper seals can be formed on packaging. They often refer to the running speed of the film on the production line. You may also see seal windows described in terms of branded machinery.

Seal strength

The maximum force needed to tear a specified width of a seal. Expressed as force per width e.g. N/25mm.

Decovery® SP-6000 XP is tested extensively to meet market sealability requirements.

Anti-blocking test

Why we also run anti-blocking tests

When packaging is stacked for a long time, any ink components can detach from the printed surface when the stock is separated.

This can also occur when substances used in printing inks transfer from the printed surface to the inner, food-contact surface.

Our blocking test calculates the overall effectiveness of a coating when stacked or compressed against other printed items.

In tests, our coating resins do not stick to the neighboring packaging, matching (and even exceeding) the performance of many fossil-based and bio-based materials in the market.
