From cradle to gate. Climate neutral MDI.
Keeping it neutral
The alternative raw materials are allocated to the products with the help of certified mass balancing according to ISCC PLUS, so no CO2 emissions are generated in this part of the value-added cycle and the production process is more sustainable.
"With the launch of our climate neutral MDI, we are now further expanding our portfolio of sustainable products. This will enable us to even better support our customers in large parts of the world in meeting their own sustainability goals and transitioning to a circular economy."
"Desmodur® CQ products are an important factor in achieving our sustainability goals. Our climate neutral MDI has another major advantage: it is a drop-in solution – so our customers can use it immediately in their production without any changeover and a higher energy efficiency.”
Even more sustainable building insulation
MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) is an indispensable raw material in the construction industry for the production of polyurethane (PU) insulation boards and sandwich panels, among other products . These have proven their value and environmental impact for many years as highly efficient elements in the thermal insulation of buildings and sustainable construction of Green Buildings. The heating or cooling requirements of buildings can be reduced by up to 70 percent through the use of PU insulation. Because PU insulation elements can therefore be designed thinner to achieve good insulation performance already, they save resources and make more usable space accessible than other insulation materials within the construction industry.
In addition to the good thermal insulation properties of PU insulating materials, our climate neutral MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) now provides a further sustainability benefit: By practically avoiding emissions during its production, it even helps to reduce embodied carbon over the life cycle of a building and the building materials. The use of PU insulating materials made from it in new buildings as well as in the renovation of older construction projects can thus make an important contribution to the responsible use of primary resources and to significantly reducing CO2 emissions for a positive environmental impact. Our climate neutral MDI can also be applied to other segments such as automotive and appliance.
Introducing our ‘CQ’ branding – a reflection of our commitment to circularity
At Covestro, as our ‘We will be fully circular’ vision outlines, we believe enabling the transition to circularity is a key part of our environmental and social responsibility. By offering alternative raw materials, innovative chemical recycling technologies, renewable energy in production and joint innovation, we aim to help the whole value chain become more circular. In order to reflect this commitment, and to make it even clearer how our products support our circular vision as well as your path towards sustainability, we are introducing a branding for our products driving circularity. The range of solutions carrying CQ will constantly grow. The first products available are our climate neutral products Desmodur® CQ 44V70L MS and Desmodur® CQ 44V20L MS as well our Desmodur® CQ 44V70L MB and Desmodur® CQ 44V20L MB with a significantly improved carbon footprint. Further CQ products are being evaluated and will be applied to metal panel, appliance and automotive solutions. The abbreviation ‘CQ’ stands for circular intelligence. Together, C and Q underline how essential thought-leading, innovative solutions can drive circularity forward.
