More Sustainable Microduct Connectors for Fiber Applications
Global fiber network expansion requires millions of fiber optic connectors annually. These seemingly small products are a key building block of digital transformation. Camozzi Technopolymers, specialized in micro injection molding, states that it produces the Series V4000 PLUS LE using full electric machines powered by 100% green energy. According to the company, the product is entirely made in Europe with more sustainable raw materials and a European supply chain, and each connector features a DNV-certified CFP value, expressed in Kg of CO₂ emitted per item.
Collaboration with Covestro was key to our market success with the Series V4000 PLUS LE. Leveraging its material expertise, Covestro supported the selection of Makrolon® RE and provided LCA data for CFP calculation, resulting in a unique, truly sustainable connector with near-zero CO₂ emissions.
According to Camozzi Technopolymers, the Series V4000 PLUS features a transparent polycarbonate housing that provides thermal stability and impact resistance. The tool-free connectable connectors are suitable for demanding environments such as Direct Install (DI) and Direct Buried (DB) applications through their robust, compact design. For the more sustainable LE series, a solution was sought to reduce the carbon footprint of the plastics without performance compromises.
The partnership with Camozzi Technopolymers is a prime example of how innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. Their pioneering spirit with the Series V4000 PLUS LE and our shared vision for more sustainable solutions led to this impressive result. Such collaborations drive industry transformation forward.
Makrolon® was replaced by bio-circular attributed Makrolon® RE, offering identical properties with a carbon footprint reduced by more than 80%. This represents a significant step toward lowering CO₂ emissions without compromising performance.
The LCA datasets provided by Covestro enabled Camozzi Technopolymers to calculate the Product Carbon Footprint (CFP) in accordance with ISO 14067. The DNV-certified results confirm an 84% reduction in CO₂ emissions for the V4000 PLUS LE compared to the standard series.
Key benefits
- Reduction of the Carbon Footprint: Significant reduction of the product’s carbon footprint with Makrolon® RE.
- Bio-Circular Raw Materials: ISCC Plus-certified bio-circular raw materials are allocated via mass balance, replacing fossil resources.
- High Performance Drop-In: Makrolon® RE and standard Makrolon® share identical properties.
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): TÜV Rheinland-certified LCA provided by Covestro enables clients to calculate their CFP.
