
KURAMA: Redefining user interfaces with haptic innovation

This need drove Kyocera to create the KURAMA demonstrator, aimed at redefining the way people interact with modern surfaces.
The project aimed to replace electro-mechanical buttons with a sleek, illuminated surface that delivered a premium user experience. The interface needed to be thin and lightweight, while still offering tactile feedback, backlighting, and durability.
To make this possible, the design had to integrate multiple functions into a single component without adding complexity or bulk. It needed to work across different applications, offering scalability along with reliable performance and responsiveness.
The result of this collaboration is KURAMA, a breakthrough solution that combines Kyocera’s Haptivity-i® piezoelectric vibration module with Covestro’s advanced polycarbonate materials. Using TactoTek® in-mold structural electronics (IMSE®) technology, KURAMA integrates haptics, lighting, and user interaction into one very thin, seamless component.
The use of Makrofol® DE 1-1 and Makroblend® OM845G enabled thin, durable construction with vibrant illumination and tactile responsiveness. Additionally, options for PCR and RE-grade materials support sustainable product design. KURAMA offers a fully customizable, elegant solution for brands seeking to elevate the user interface experience through innovation and efficiency.
