Circular CMF Design Guide: Integrating Circularity into Aesthetic Design

As the circular economy gains momentum, designers face new challenges and opportunities involving recycled and recyclable plastics. In response, we partnered with Chris Lefteri Design to create the Circular CMF Guide, providing actionable guidance on making informed color, material, and finish decisions.

Task

Design for Circularity through CMF

While design has been increasingly acknowledged as a key enabler of a circular economy, today’s designers face numerous challenges in integrating circularity into their projects. One such challenge involves the utilization of circular materials such as recycled plastics, which are on the trend of CMF design but also introduce a distinct set of challenges and opportunities compared to new, virgin plastics. Furthermore, choices about color and finish can affect the recyclability of plastic products.

To support designers in embracing circular design principles, we have taken on the task of creating a hands-on CMF (Color, Material, Finish) guide to address these issues. This initiative builds on our 2021 release of the Circular Design Guidebook for the electronics industry, which was designed to guide designers to incorporate circular thinking from the outset of their design processes.

Covestro partnered with Chris Lefteri Design to develop the Circular CMF Guide, aimed at supporting designers in adopting circular design.
Challenge

Addressing the Complexity of CMF design in Recycled and Recyclable Plastics

The challenges are multi-faceted. Foremost among these is the inherent variability and limitations of recycled plastics, complicating decisions about color, material, and finish. There are also misconceptions around recycled plastics in that they are considered "inferior" than virgin plastics and that their imperfections must be designed out rather than embraced as a design asset. Additionally, designers need to balance aesthetic appeal with practical recyclability requirements, ensuring their choices facilitate rather than impede the recycling process at the end of a product's life cycle.

Currently there is a shortage of inspiring examples and practical resources. Therefore, the circular CMF guide aims to bolster designers’ confidence in working with recycled and recyclable plastics, addressing both technical and emotional aspects.

At Covestro, we are adept at connecting circularity, aesthetics and functionality through our expertise in sustainable materials and design. The Circular CMF Guide is crafted to empower designers in navigating the challenges and opportunities with recycled and recyclable plastics, enhancing their ability to design confidently for materializing circularity.

Solution

Comprehensive Circular CMF Guide

To tackle these challenges, we partnered with Chris Lefteri Design to develop the Circular CMF Guide. This guide provides practical advice on working with recycled and recyclable plastics, addressing the many facets of CMF design such as color, transparency, finishing techniques, and the use of special effects to enhance the appeal of more sustainable products. By offering actionable insights and examples, the guide assists designers in making choices that are both visually appealing and environmentally responsible.

This collaboration merges our expertise in materials science with Chris Lefteri Design's innovative approach to CMF design, resulting in a user-friendly resource that simplifies the CMF decision-making process for circular design.

The Circular CMF Guide addresses the many facets of CMF design for recycled and recyclable plastics.

Using circular plastics requires designers to rewrite the product development process. It’s only by understanding how to use these new materials and putting them at the forefront of designing that we are going to have any meaningful impact on reducing and reusing waste.
