When manufacturing HR foams, it is essential to inject air into the mixing chamber in order to obtain an irregular cell structure. This structure improves the permeability of the foam, reduces any tendency to shrinkage and gives a largely linear compression hardness curve. The amount of air metered in must be determined experimentally in accordance with the prevailing conditions. On the other hand, excessive air in the raw materials (caused for example by inappropriate recirculation) will lead to problems, e. g. defects at the base of the foam block, coarse cell structure or local voids caused by foam collapse etc.HR foams differ in certain respects from conventional polyether slabstock foams. For example, it is not possible to determine gel time. HR foams also adhere strongly to soda kraft paper. Siliconised or PE-coated paper is easier to remove. Since HR foams do not have a completely open-cell structure after production, they need to be crushed to destroy the cell membranes and to obtain an optimum open-cell structure, permeability and elasticity. This must be done before measuring their mechanical properties. The temperature of the raw materials should be kept constant during processing to ensure largely reproducible results.Special attention is required concerning the handling of HR silicones.Normally HR silicones are insoluble in water and should be kept separately from the standard silicones by all means.Minor concentrations of standard silicones lead to non-reversible shrinkage of HR foams.
