General Characterization
Desmodur VP PU 0129 M is a blend of 4,4'-, 2,4' and 2,2'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate with a relatively high content of 2,4'-isomer. The product is used to manufacture polyurethanes.
Storage Conditions
Recommended storage temperature: +20 to +30 °C
Shelf life (ex works): 6 months if stored in moisture-tight drums
Like all isocyanates, Desmodur VP PU 0129 M is sensitive to moisture and reacts with water to form insoluble urea derivatives and carbon dioxide. The generation of carbon dioxide in sealed containers can lead to a dangerous build-up of pressure. Storage at temperature above 30 °C speeds up the formation of dimers (uretidinedione) which are reducing the shelf life of the product. Storing Desmodur VP. PU 0129 M in a crystallised or partially crystallised state also leads to the relatively rapid formation of dimers and should therefore be avoided. Provided dimerisation is not too far advanced, the crystallised product can still be brought back to a usable state by melting it rapidly but gently at a temperature in the range of 60 to 70 °C. The product should never be heated to a temperature in excess of 70 °C. Once it is melted, the product must be homogenised and cooled down to the recommended storage temperature. Since this treatment creates a higher content of dimers, it is then advisable to use the product as soon as possible. The access of air, particularly if combined with exposure to light over a longer period of time, can result in yellowish to yellow discoloration of the product.
