Product description
Desmodur® PF is a modified diphenyl-methane-4,4'-diisocyanate (MDI).Desmodur® PF is a modified diisocyanate that is liquid at room temperature and is suitable for combination with Baycoll®, Desmophen® and Acclaim® in the formulation of adhesives.
Applications
DESMODUR PF is a colourless to yellowish coloured, modified diphenylmethane 4,4' diisocyanate.
It can be used in conjunction with polyols for the production of polyurethane products.
Sampling
Moisture access should be prevented when taking product samples.
Specification
Property | Test Condition | Value | Unit | Standard |
---|---|---|---|---|
NCO | 23,0 ± 0,5 | % | MDI-01-01 | |
Viscosity | 25 °C | 600 ± 100 | mPa*s | MDI-01-02 |
Hydrolysable chlorine | (Cl) | max. 50 | mg/kg | MDI-01-04 |
* Lengthy storage can lead to an increase in the viscosity of DESMODUR PF, although in our experience this has no adverse effect on the processing properties of the product.

Storage time
Covestro represents that, for a period of 6 months following the day of shipment as stated in the respective delivery documents, the product will meet the values set forth in section "specification" above provided that the product is stored in full compliance with the storage conditions and is otherwise handled appropriately.
The lapse of this period does not necessarily mean that the product no longer meets specifications. However, prior to using said product, Covestro recommends to test such a product if it still meets the specifications. Covestro does not make any representation regarding the product after the period and Covestro shall not be responsible or liable in any way for the product failing to meet specifications after the period.
Processing
Storage for long periods at temperatures below 20 °C or above 25 °C leads to a deterioration in quality.
At temperatures below 20 °C starts partial crystallization, encouraging the formation of infusible dimers. This makes it impossible to completely melt the product, even if it has been stored for only three weeks. Storage at temperatures above 25 °C also accelerates the formation of insoluble sediment (dimers). At 40 °C, for example, the storage stability of the product is reduced to 4 months.
Freshly crystallized DESMODUR PF must be remelted immediately by heating to a maximum temperature of 60 to 70 °C. In doing so, it is important to ensure that the entire contents of the drum are melted and homogenized. The drum should then be kept sealed at the recommended storage temperature.
Drums including empty ones should always be kept tightly sealed. The product should never be allowed to come into contact with water, which reacts with DESMODUR PF to form polyureas and carbon dioxide. Contact with water in any form (damp drums, solvents containing water, moist air) must be prevented not only during storage, but also when removing material from drums and during processing. Failure to do so may lead to a dangerous build up of pressure in tanks and drums due to the generation of carbon dioxide. In addition, polyureas forming in DESMODUR PF can cause solids to separate out, leading to blockages in the filters, pumps and pipelines of the processing equipment and resulting in production problems.
