More Sustainable Microduct Connectors for Fiber Applications
Camozzi Technopolymers states that the Series V4000 PLUS LE uses Makrolon® RE from Covestro to manufacture more sustainable microduct connectors for fiber optic networks (FTTx), with a reported carbon footprint of the product (CFP) reduced by up to 84% versus the standard V4000 PLUS series.
Carbon Footprint Reduction for Fiber Network Components
Global fiber network expansion requires millions of fiber optic connectors annually. These seemingly small products are a key building block of digital transformation. Camozzi Technopolymers, specialized in micro injection molding, states that it produces the Series V4000 PLUS LE using full electric machines powered by 100% green energy. According to the company, the product is entirely made in Europe with more sustainable raw materials and a European supply chain, and each connector features a DNV-certified CFP value, expressed in Kg of CO₂ emitted per item.
Challenge
More Sustainable Polymers Without Compromising Performance
According to Camozzi Technopolymers, the Series V4000 PLUS features a transparent polycarbonate housing that provides thermal stability and impact resistance. The tool-free connectable connectors are suitable for demanding environments such as Direct Install (DI) and Direct Buried (DB) applications through their robust, compact design. For the more sustainable LE series, a solution was sought to reduce the carbon footprint of the plastics without performance compromises.
Solution
Drop-In with Attributed Bio-Circular Raw Materials
Makrolon® was replaced by bio-circular attributed Makrolon® RE, offering identical properties with a carbon footprint reduced by more than 80%. This represents a significant step toward lowering CO₂ emissions without compromising performance.
The LCA datasets provided by Covestro enabled Camozzi Technopolymers to calculate the Product Carbon Footprint (CFP) in accordance with ISO 14067. The DNV-certified results confirm an 84% reduction in CO₂ emissions for the V4000 PLUS LE compared to the standard series.
