Lower noise: Baynat® polyurethane headliner material reduces noise in car interiors

More and more drivers are demanding car interiors that block out road and wind noise – enabling them to enjoy a more pleasant experience, to concentrate better on the road and passengers, or to simply have a quiet, stress-free drive.
Polyurethane (PUR) foam, with its excellent acoustic properties, is a natural choice in enabling calming, comfortable interiors.
Car headliners produced with PUR usually consist of three layers: a hard foam carrier, a soft foam layer, and an outer fabric layer.
Baynat®, made by Covestro, serves as the hard foam carrier giving rigidity to the overall headliner. It is not only lightweight and easy to apply, it also helps to reduce acoustic noise inside the vehicle. At the same time, it provides a soft touch, contributes to high-quality interior air, and is cost effective.
Baynat® foam provides leading acoustic properties, especially when compared to alternative headliner technologies.

Our approach with Baynat® headliner foam highlights Covestro’s strong commitment to developing high-performing products for automotive interiors that create a quiet and pleasant experience, while contributing to high-quality car interior air. This low-emission formulation approach also serves as a guide for developments in other polyurethane applications.

Lower emissions: Baynat® foam manufacturing leads to fewer VOC emissions

Covestro continuously focuses its efforts on creating clean products that contribute to high-quality car interior air. These efforts highlight our leadership in the area of low product emissions.
A recent example is the new Baynat® headliner system. It was developed to emit fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) overall of the finished foam. To date, catalyst scavengers have often been used in formulations to lower VOC emissions. However, this increases the cost and complexity of the formulation.
The new Covestro Baynat® development achieves very low emissions without the use of extra scavengers. This not only saves formulation costs, it also challenges the view that low-emission formulations cannot be developed without the use of scavengers.

Higher aesthetics: Baynat® PUR foam enables futuristic vehicle design

Thanks to the inherent properties of polyurethane (PUR) foam material, car manufacturers and car interior designers have a range of style possibilities.
With an ever-increasing demand among consumers for more futuristic designs, especially in view of electric mobility, Baynat® PUR foam provides design flexibility.
Baynat® is suitable for complex mold shapes, allows for a soft-touch feel, and can be covered in a fabric of choice. These pleasing aesthetics are complemented by a reduction in outside noise to create a unique car interior experience.

Higher commitment: Covestro is continuously improving materials and manufacturing

Baynat® as a PUR foam material for headliners is a strategic application for the automotive business. Our developments in this area are proof of our continued expertise and market leadership for this application.
Our work shows our commitment to pushing boundaries in striving for the continuous improvement of our products. This effort supports the company’s sustainable development goals of responsible consumption and production.
Covestro has pioneered this new low-emission approach with Baynat® and has a strong commitment to continuous improvement. We can scale the approach to other systems and other automotive PUR applications.
