Bio-circular attributed share is reducing the CO2 footprint

Makrolon® RE, Bayblend® RE, Makroblend® RE and Apec ® RE are circular solutions from Covestro attributed with a high sustainable share, that addresses the industry’s requirements for low carbon footprint solutions.

Covestro uses alternative raw materials that have been assigned renewable raw materials through mass balancing as well as renewable energy, and can thus be certified as having up to 72% sustainable materials and a net carbon footprint of up to zero. Makrolon® RE, Bayblend® RE, Apec ® RE and Makroblend® RE resins are the drop-in solutions for brands seeking high performance and best-in-class environmental performance.

Sustainable advantages of the Polycarbonate RE portfolio at a glance

If you are looking for alternative raw materials with a lower carbon footprint, the Makrolon® RE portfolio is just what you need. This RE portfolio offers the same high quality and performance as fossil-based polycarbonates.

With the introduction of a climate-neutral* polycarbonate, we are supporting our customers to make use of more circular material solutions while at the same time reducing their carbon footprint. With our RE product portfolio, we pursue the goal of offering our customers more sustainable products via a direct drop-in solution.

Our Makrolon® RE portfolio paves the way for a sustainable and climate-neutral circular economy, that is not just a vision for tomorrow, but is ready to use today. 

Our products with an attributed renewable content also include our Makroblend® RE and Bayblend® RE products.

Climate neutrality is proven via an assessment of a partial product life cycle from resource extraction (cradle) to the factory gate, also referred to as cradle to gate assessment The calculation takes into account biogenic carbon sequestration, is based on preliminary data from the supply chain and replaces the power grid mix with renewable electricity used for the manufacturing process. No compensation measures have been applied.

Bio-circular attributed raw materials

Our Makrolon® RE products are ISCC PLUS* certified and promote the circular economy – conserving natural resources. Our products have an attributed sustainable share of up to 72% according to ISCC PLUS. 

Less fossil raw materials are required as they are partially replaced by renewable ones made with bio-waste and residues. These raw materials are mass balanced and attributed to our RE products.

The ISCC PLUS certification ensures the systematic traceability of raw material quantities and their allocation to the respective products.

Reduced carbon footprint – all the way to climate neutrality

On the journey to climate neutrality, every step counts. All products from the RE series offer significant carbon footprint savings compared to the standard materials. Selected Makrolon® RE grades even are climate neutral.

A reviewed Life Cycle Assessment has confirmed the significant carbon footprint savings achieved by using the allocated renewable feedstocks and energy* for products of the RE portfolio.
