Case study
Iconic sports car roof made with advanced Makrolon® AG2677
Bugatti needed a transparent, light-weight roof to complement the design of its Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, one of the fastest super sports cars on the road. The roof material needed to complement the car’s sporty, open-roadster character while satisfying its commitment to safety. Bugatti chose automotive glazing created with Makrolon® AG polycarbonate.
Provide the ideal material for a transparent, panoramic roof to be used on the Bugatti Veyron. Naturally, the material had to satisfy Bugatti’s stringent test regulations and narrow tolerance requirements, all while being highly functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Polycarbonate glazing for high-performance automotive roofing applications needs to meet a variety of requirements. These include exceptional strength and low energy transmission values, as well as vehicle safeguards for interiors and passengers. The material needs to be extremely strong and durable, yet extremely light.
The panoramic roof was made for Bugatti by KRD Sicherheitstechnik GmbH from 5 mm-thick solid sheets AG2677 polycarbonate. Remarkably the roof, which is 1,230 mm long and up to 1,050 mm wide, weighs no more than 5.6 kg. It is made from transparent sheets printed with a black border, which are then thermoformed and coated with Momentive Performance Materials GmbH’s AS4000 polysiloxane wet-coat system, translating to a highly scratch- and weather-resistant roof.
