Next generation TPU hinge material

Our special Makrofol® ID films are the foundation of ultra-secure passport data page construction, which is well illustrated by our multi-layer blown TPU film Platilon® ID 9144 for e-passport hinges. The material makes travel documents far more secure and durable. This is because it makes it possible to embed chips in the data or cover page of passport booklets. The hinge of the data page consists of a multi-layer film composite made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).

Multi-layer Platilon® ID 9144 bonds excellently with polycarbonate. This ensures data pages can’t be delaminated without destruction of the passport. In addition, the flexibility of this TPU enables unlimited bending, opening and closing without the appearance of cracks or breaks - and the material can be securely sewn into passports using standard methods. What’s more, the melt behavior and flexibility of our Platilon® ID TPU are ideally suited to protecting integrated chips and antennas. And for those in search of an even more robust material, our new Platilon® ID9144 film offers a further 35 percent increase in tear resistance compared to our standard Platilon® ID 9122.
Specialty films for secure passport data page construction
Added security with clear windows

Clear window technology is an additional security feature against counterfeiting attempts. Extremely thin, this Makrofol® ID polycarbonate film for ID cards and passport data pages means more security features can be embedded while reducing cycle time thanks to a less complex lamination process. High opaque thin white Makrofol® ID film can also be used to reduce visibility of integrated antennas and chips.

Another thing that makes our film solution so innovative is that it enables a new production method, which does not require filling of the punched window hole in the data page with an additional plug. During the lamination process the transparent layers merge into the holes of the high opaque thin white layer without any irregularities on the document’s surface. The advantage here is that this allows more space for additional layers and the integration of additional security features. Complex window geometries can also be realized.

Tailoring identity solutions to specific requirements

More conventional manufacturing methods remain an option in those cases they are preferred for practical or historical reasons. It is also possible to enjoy the best of both worlds by employing the benefits of Makrofol® ID and Platilon® ID together. This can optimize passport and identity card security by combining printing, embossing, lamination, chip implanting, die cutting, and, not least, personalization with high resolution images via laser engraving technology.
Superior security with Makrofol® ID superlaser personalization technology

Using Makrofol® ID superlaser polycarbonate films for ID cards and passport data pages allows them to be laser-engraved with a citizen’s data and photo at even higher contrast than standard industry laser-reactive overlay films. As personal data reside in the top and core layer of the Superlaser three-layer-film-structure, Makrofol® ID superlaser provides better protection against forgery and counterfeiting.

The laser personalization process with Makrofol® ID superlaser is much faster and less costly compared to conventional  laser grades. And Makrofol® ID superlaser´s triple-layer composite structure is extremely sensitive to laser radiation so that laser engraving requires less time. This film also allows enhanced contrast.
More design freedom with less production complexity

Compared to individual films, the layers in our Platilon® ID film composite have lower layer thicknesses and thus allow greater design freedom, especially for the thinner data pages. The thin material simplifies the integration of safety features and lower layer thickness also reduces production cycle times and cuts costs.
To satisfy the demand for smarter, more durable identity documents we provide films for ID cards and for the integrated passport concept.
