Towards more sustainable polymers for cosmetics
Covestro is committed to driving the circular economy, key to protecting the climate and natural resources. This involves considering the product life cycle in its entirety. This includes the raw materials, production, downstream operations, use of our products and their end-of-use phase. During the development of new cosmetic ingredients, R&D pays particularly attention to raw material sourcing and its biodegradability profile. Making use of unique Baycusan® polyurethane chemistry features, new film formers meeting modern market requirements can be eco-designed. Following the acquisition of the Resins & Functional Materials business (RFM) from Royal DSM on April 1, 2021, Covestro has expanded its portfolio of technologies – both in-house and through joint ventures – to include plant-based polyester, starch-derivatives currently used for industrial and agricultural applications and more. All these technologies could be transferred to cosmetics applications. This offers opportunities to further extend cosmetics raw materials with new chemistries and new claims, acting as an important addition to the existing partially bio-based products range of Covestro. With this new plant-based technologies toolbox, Covestro will be moving from partially naturally-derived to 100% bio-based materials with a reduced carbon footprint compared to fossil-based materials, thus supporting our vision to become fully circular.
Next generation of makeup: Combining performance & natural sourcing
Consumers seek "greener“ makeup. The development of modern formulations becomes challenging as consumers require products that guarantee a strong, long-lasting performance and keep high level of plant-based ingredients. The new naturally-derived Baycusan® eco E 1001 film former can help tackle this challenge. With its 56% bio-based content, it fulfills the criteria of a naturally-derived ingredient according to the ISO 16128 norm and imparts outstanding benefits to mascara and liquid foundation formulations. Discover how Baycusan® eco E 1001 opens new perspectives for the next generation of makeup!
