TPU and material with CO₂ raw ingredient merge for increased sustainability in tubing

At Covestro, we’re always looking for new ways to incorporate sustainability for a brighter world. By viewing carbon dioxide (CO2) as a valuable raw material rather than a waste product, we’ve opened new possibilities to use emissions as a chemical feedstock. cardyon®—our raw material made with up to 20 percent CO2—is one prime example.

We pushed the boundaries of what’s possible to develop the first TPU containing polyether carbonate polyols based on our CO2 technology: Desmopan® 37385A. With traditional TPU as the go-to for pneumatic tubes, we recognized the opportunity to instead use our new TPU product.

With our novel TPU grade based on cardyon®, manufacturers can lower the carbon footprint of tubing used in their industrial manufacturing operations and in doing so, achieve a new level of sustainability.

Sustainable materials meet industrial requirements

When compared to conventional TPU materials, our cardyon®-based TPU leaves a lower carbon footprint, helps close the carbon cycle and conserves fossil resources. And, unlike many bio-based materials, it does not compete with food production.

Desmopan® 37385A contains between 5.5 and 6 percent CO2. Not only is it more sustainable, but it also meets the needs of industrial applications. This grade has a hardness of 85 Shore A and offers mechanical properties that are at least the same level—if not better—as conventional TPU grades of similar hardness. For example, it features a tensile strength of 36 megapascals and the elongation at break reaches 660 percent (DIN 53503). While designed for extrusion, Desmopan® 37385A is also suitable for injection molding.

This convergence of TPU and our material that incorporates CO2 as a raw ingredient is just another way we’re driving sustainability in the construction industry.
