First-ever automotive clearcoat containing bio-based hardener

Copied to clipboard

Automotive manufacturers and suppliers are constantly working to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions in their production processes.

Task

Show sustainable clearcoat can reduce emissions

Together with a project team from the BASF Coatings Division and automotive manufacturer Audi, we intended to show that sustainable car body coatings could be a promising way to reduce emissions.
Challenge

Meet specifications without sacrificing quality

The major challenge in this cooperation was, on the one hand, to meet the highest specifications for a car coating and, on the other hand, to avoid any compromise in terms of coating quality and performance.

The quality of this paintwork job done in our existing facilities satisfies our specifications, and the results are promising. This project has given Audi a pioneering role in the automotive industry for this particular topic.

Solution

Bio-based hardener for sustainable automotive coatings

BASF developed their clearcoat using our bio-based hardener Desmodur® eco N 7300. 70% of the hardener’s carbon content comes from renewable raw materials, which reduces the use of fossil-based resources. For the first time ever, Audi Q2 test bodies were successfully painted with the clearcoat containing the bio-based hardener Desmodur ® eco N 7300 under near serial conditions at the Ingolstadt plant. “The quality of this paintwork job done in our existing facilities satisfies our specifications, and the results are promising. This project has given Audi a pioneering role in the automotive industry for this particular topic,” says Thomas Heußer, Head of Technology Development Materials and Process Engineering at Audi. And Dr. Matthijs Groenewolt, Head of Development Clearcoat and Topcoat Europe at BASF added: “This new clearcoat enables us to support our customers in achieving their sustainability goals – without having to compromise on quality and performance."
